The recent computer hacks on Optus and Medibank are just precursors to further hacking unless serious action is taken.

The attacks threaten the credibility of those company's security measures as well as exposing customers to fraud and shareholders to ransom claims.

It's incredible to me that the CEO's have not resigned or be sacked for allowing their companies to be so vulnerable. Heads have to roll to restore some credibility and large fines should be levied to ensure that companies take security seriously.

What else do members think can be done ? A national firewall perhaps ? It's getting to the point that we can't trust anyone who holds our data, not even governments.

I'd be quite happy when signing on to a new business to walk in to the office, have some full-time employee sight my ID, tick a box for the 100 points or whatever, but store no information in their system, and do it that way to become a happy customer.

A little inconvenient for many, but it would be my preferred choice.

Could even be done at Australia Post given their staff would (I assume) have the relevant security clearances and so on to be verifying ID.

AP staff just tick the box and sign it that ID has been verified but nothing retained on file.

Rise in data breaches and insider incidents provides increased awareness to Security vendors:
  1. Employee or contractor negligence ... 56%
  2. Criminal & malicious insider ................ 28%
  3. Credential thief (imposter risk) ........... 18%

awesome , maybe i can get my test results without going to get the sugar-coated version from the GP

LOL , i would probably believe him/her i have been fed enough radioactive dye in the last 6 years , about a dozen X-rays as well

but even the GP isn't worth $100,000 to me , i would just change to the straight shooter ( who had a diplomacy bypass .. just like me )

and they can't rat to my boss about 'substances ' i already have to get special exemptions for the stuff i am on ( it probably won't 'cure ' cancer until the patent runs out )

It's amazing when you buy something in a large retail store like JB how they ask for your email when you check out. I think most customers must just hand it over because when I say no, I tend to get this look from the checkout person. :jawdrop: As if it's an unusual response.

If you do a deal and they tell you you are cured for 50k, best deal ever??
sadly the crims might be more likely to cure it than the doctors ( most cancer survivors do into remission .. have had two melanomas removed from my head )

why am a tiny bit annoyed, several doctors told my parents than i needed plenty of sunshine , to grow healthy ( sunburn , blisters , freckles and melanomas )

I think part of it is how quickly all this has become an issue.

It wasn't long ago that every household had a big book that listed everyone else's street address and phone number. Every year a new one was delivered just to make sure we all had up to date information.

The idea that names, addresses and contact information would be regarded as confidential is relatively new.

not to me , i have never had a phone line in my own name in my life ( i either shared a house , or lived without a landline connection

Yes, but I remember wealthy people and public figures were never listed in phone books. Silent numbers.

There's always an exception..... :D
and i still get spammers and scammers ( just less than most )

i guess i should have kept an associate's number ( he used to troll and track , he LOVED scammers and spammers )

but yes i am just wired differently to most
