The imposition of tariffs by the Trump administration could be good news for Australian farmers, particularly almond growers who are the world’s second-largest producers of the commodity behind the US which supplies 80 per cent of global output.

We have very useful advantages over California for competing: our free trade agreements both with China and India, which are the two biggest importing markets for almonds,” said Michael Whitehead, director of agribusiness at ANZ. The US doesn’t have such a deal with the Asian nations, he noted.

This year is shaping up well for the Australian almond industry with output expected to jump 30 per cent to 180,000 tonnes, thanks to favourable weather conditions and a surge in plantings made seven years ago now ready for harvest.

Almonds are one of the country’s most valuable horticulture crops along with avocados, grapes, and citrus and there are more than 60,000 hectares of almond orchards in Australia,

Further bolstering optimism for the tree nut is the outlook for prices given demand is forecast to outstrip supply. “This is partly based on growing almond consumption in markets like China, India, and the Middle East,” said Mr Whitehead. China is the world’s largest importer of almonds as consumers embrace health-conscious diets.
