Syrian Civil War

just in case no-one's paying attention

-Aleppo has been overrun by anti Assad forces, namely Jihadists and their Turkish-backed allies.
- Syrian Army melted away, mainly Sunni groups from Idlib in control.
- Russians are grouping for a last ditch stand, in one suburb.
- Kurds in a tricky spot, again . Syrian National Army (SNA) as well as other Opposition Forces in Northern Syria, have called on the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Kurdish Elements to the North of Aleppo to Immediately Evacuate their Positions, due to their ongoing Offensive against the Assad Regime’s Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
- US forces trying to stop pro Iranians pushing out of the desert.
Yet no protests on our streets.

It's incredible that Aleppo looks as though it will fall to the rebels. Russia getting bogged down in Ukraine has meant that it cannot also defend the Assad regime. It took Assad four long years to take the city, and the fact he seems to have lost it again speaks volumes about the constantly shifting power dynamics in that part of the world.

My understanding: Ukraine forces collapsing in the last weeks, the US/NATO think it is good timing to help al Qaeda,ISIS in Syria as it could distract Iran Russian allies.
Probably pushed by Turkey / Israel
US news talking about "Syrian opposition forces",
Helping the Talibans and paying the price on 9/11 was not a good enough lesson...Trump..quick...

I heard that with Russia, Iran and Hezbollah occupied elsewhere, Assad's defenses on the ground in Syria had become paper thin. The rebels took advantage of this in a co-ordinated offensive and have made a lot of ground. I'm also hearing that sleeper cells in Damascus have been activated and the capital may fall in the coming weeks.

This is a very unexpected turn of events and I am wondering how it may affect financial markets.

Syria Update:

- On Monday, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. General Pat Ryder announced that the U.S.-Russian military-to-military deconfliction hotline was used to prevent a future miscalculation. The tempo of both U.S. and Russian operations has increased significantly in the past week.

- The Russian base in the Tartus region of Syria comes under significant threat from advancing opposition forces. As of late yesterday, opposition forces, led by HTS, were just ~20 km from the Latakia Naval Base. Most recently, repeated explosions have been reported in the local region.

- It’s become increasingly clear that opposition forces are seeking to isolate the city of Hama in order to make the position of the SAA forces tasked with its defense untenable. A number of key heights and ground lines of communication (GLOC) on the outskirts of the city have been taken. Such successes will only serve to potentiate opposition efforts to isolate the city. Fighting has already been reported within the city limits

And the CIA supporting Al-Qaïda might have some purpose too

Yeap, well better get source from both sides.
If i was just following wsj, the Ukrainians would have been in Vladivostok 2 years ago.
the CIA interpretation is my own,:
did Al-Qaïda seize one of these jets or not?
Was Al-Qaïda assault planned with the Israel attack on Hezbollah position...i know the irony there..and were the US/Turkey proxies attacks just coincidences..

Syrian Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) Leader Abu Mohammed al-Joulani tspeaking on CNN:
- This regime (Assad) is dead; we will establish a government based on a people’s council.
- No one has the right to erase another group. These sects have coexisted in this region for hundreds of years, and no one has the right to eliminate them.
- Syria deserves a governing system that is institutional, not one where a single ruler makes arbitrary decisions.
- A person in their twenties will have a different personality than someone in their thirties or forties, and certainly someone in their fifties. This is human nature.

is there hope? probably not.

Seems it's all over for Assad and the Baaths. Shot though like a Bondi tram.

That was quick.
Appears without Hamas the Assad family had no real on the ground support.

Assad père et fils were Alawite, aligned with Shia. Recently, they were played by Iran which used Syria as a conduit to subvert Lebanon, boost Hezbollah and pressure Israel.

HTS are a Sunni mob, backed by Turkey. That country has issues with the Kurds, as per the PKK and hence the SDF, and there will be further "adjustments" down the line..

Amongst many, there are Greek orthodox communities, villages that speak Aramaic (Jesus' language), and Druze in the south. And secular people .

going to be very hard to recreate the omelette

Sorry, Hezbollah. They were a big support to the Assad regime.

I was once very interested in Syria as my gf's father of the time was from there.
There is a book which is a must have reading about the ethnic composition of Syria. Will try to find its title
Only the machine guns of the then french protectorate managed to avoid the rising of the Sunni lower class last century.
I suspect that the collapse of the Allawi regime de facto garantee the genocide of all other ethnics communities.
But hey, we welcomed the talibans so why not Daesh
Kurds first target obviously as the US push was via Turkey.but in 10y time, i doubt any non Sunni, women, gays or intellectuals will be having a great life if alive
Another sad day for mankind in front of the green plague.

Not sure but read a theory it would be part of a Trump Putin deal:
Putin keeping Ukraine gains vs US taking over Syria to block Iran..not sure what to think of that.
In any case, another strategic move lose lose for the EU: more terrorism, more migrants, more bombings, rapes and throat slashings.
I am just waiting for the EU leaders celebrating the coming of democracy in Syria 😂
Lybia #2 in worse

That would not make no sense. If Putin managed to get Trump to agree to that, it would mean Trump is just his patsy.

Putin just lost Syria to essentially the Daesh along with his naval port. Why would that mean Trump would let him have everything he wants? Trump hates losers.
